Chocolate Summer

Before we say anything else — THANK YOU.

We at Kakao couldn’t be more pleased and proud and honored and humbled about being named Favorite Chocolatier in St. Louis by the readers of Sauce Magazine. Last year we weren’t on the list, and this year you voted us to the top. Thank you!

We were also surprised to see our Big Squeal Bacon Brittle featured in the same issue of Sauce. Keeping up with the skyrocketing demand has been a challenge here — getting more Northern Missouri Pecans and then more bacon from Hinkebein Hills Farms, and soon more pecans…

By the way, The Big Squeal also won a trophy at the Retail Confectioners International conference in Lexington, Kentucky in June, as voted by other confectioners from across the country. The Big Squeal really is a Big Deal!

Meanwhile, there are a couple of noteworthy events coming up that you need to get on your calendar. The first is the Slow Food St. Louis “Art of Food” event on Saturday, July 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. As Slow Foods describes it, this is “a canvas of culinary inspired art and delectable edibles” you won’t want to miss. Lots of great art to admire and purchase, and hors d’oeuvres from top restaurants like Niche, Local Harvest Cafe, Monarch and others.

Kakao Chocolate will be offering — introducing, really — two very special confections. We’re keeping them under wraps, but we can tell you that one of them will be vegan, and the other carnivorous. And that one of them will involve a combination of two of our most popular confections.

Chocolate Purists will want to bring a pad, pencil and their taste buds to a Single-Origin Chocolate Tasting class to be held at the Missouri Botanical Garden on Tuesday, August 10. We’re going to run through some great single-origin chocolates from around the world, and talk about some important facts in the production of sustainable chocolate. Did I mention there’d be lots of chocolate to taste?

Lots more Kakao events coming up, like another Wine & Chocolate Pairing Class, and even a Beer & Chocolate Pairing Class. Kakao will be at The Riverfront Times Artopia in August, and later this fall we’ve got a Candy Making Class  and the Best of Missouri Market at the Botanical Garden. Stay tuned for more details!
