Chocolate and Wine Pairing (finally…)

Posted in Uncategorized on August 31, 2010 by Brian

Chocolate and wine have gone together as long as, well, there have been chocolate and wine in the same place. Both are grown in different parts of the world, they both come in a variety of different, well, varietals, and both final products are dependent on a number of different factors in how they’re made.

And let’s be honest — they both taste great, and together can taste even better.

So let’s get them together. Here, at Kakao. With you. On Friday, September 17 at 7 p.m.

Pelletier the Chocolatier and local wine expert Kyle Harsha, a certified Sommelier, will guide you through a  pairing of handmade chocolate and fine wines.  We’ll show how the classic pairing of the two foods (food groups?) can be elevated to an even higher level by considering the various flavor components available in each. And we’ll match them (really, we’ve been practicing) for an experience that will border on ethereal.

Cost for the event is $25, and reservations are required (and space is limited). Please call the Kakao shop at 314.771.2310 and we’ll take your name, phone and credit card to hold your spot(s). Last time we sold out and had a waiting list, so if you need to cancel please call us by September 14 so we can let someone else have your seat.

Questions? Give us a call, or stop by Kakao at 2301 S. Jefferson.

Way Behind

But we’re catching up!

Things have been busy at Kakao, and I’m sorry I haven’t been keeping up with the blog posts. We’ve got A LOT happening, so here’s a quick update.

– If you haven’t been in the shop in a couple of weeks (really, if you were last there two weeks ago), things have changed dramatically. We’ve replaced the cafe tables with display tables, added a beautiful hutch, and had an amazing new mural painted on our wall. Still to come: oversized window signs and photos (so people know that we’re a chocolate shop — funny how people still ask the question when they come into the store)  and a serious candy case.

– All of this is preparation for the holiday season. No, we’re not making chocolate for that yet (the mass market chocolate companies finished that long ago, are done with Valentine and Easter 2011, and are making things for next Halloween right now), but we’re getting our truffles in a row while we can. Part of that is our growing team — more on them in a future post (soon, I promise!).

Now, you really need to mark your calendars for a couple of upcoming events.

– Wine & Chocolate Pairing Class, Friday, September 17. We’ll have more details on that in the next couple of days. Last time this filled up quickly, so you should reserve your spot now by calling the shop at 314.771.2310.

Healthy Planet Food and Farmer’s Expo, Sunday, September 19. Kakao (and our friends and supplier Traveling Tea) will be sampling and selling at this event in Webster Groves.

Green Homes Festival, Saturday, September 25, Grand Center. A fantastic event that we weathered last year (through threeseparate storms in one afternoon), sponsored by our friends at the Earthways Center, the masters of sustainability.

Best of Missouri Market, Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3 at the Missouri Botanic Garden. This is going to be a really exciting event for us, and we hope you’ll come down to support us, the other vendors, and the Garden.

Fall Candymaking Class, Wednesday, October 27, 7 p.m. at the Missouri Botanic Garden. Pumpkin marshmallows, anyone?

Chocolate Relaxation Class, Wednesday, November 3, 7 p.m. at the Missouri Botanic Garden. We’ll put to rest all those myths that chocolate isn’t healthy, and show you how to really enjoy your chocolate.

We’ve got a lot more planned for the coming months, and we’ll give you more details about everything as soon as we can. We’re also planning to get the rest of our team involved in the blog, with recipes, tips and tricks, and behind-the-scenes happenings at Kakao.

See you soon!

Back to School

Posted in Uncategorized on August 11, 2010 by Brian

Ah, the heat of August can only mean one thing: back to school is right around the corner.

While you’re enjoying your last days of freedom (or the opposite, as your case may be), we’re asking you to give a hand to some folks who view back to school as a financial challenge.

Kakao is partnering with the St. Louis Office for Developmental Disability Resources, a publicly funded agency that supports community-based services for developmentally disabled people who want to stay in their homes and community. These agencies provide a variety of services ranging from life and job skills coaching to learning how to get along with others.

I had a moving experience when I overheard one of the DDR workers counseling someone in a restaurant. The counselor was struggling to overcome a number of distractions, but managed to keep her client focused on the tasks at hand in an amazing way. I was so impressed I followed up to see how I can help.

How Kakao and our customers can help, that is.

Kakao is collecting school supplies for families of the developmentally disabled in the city. We need everything, from crayons to notebooks to pens and pencils and backpacks. We’ve got a trunk in the lobby and we’re hoping to fill it up.

So, if you bring in four new school supplies this week (by Saturday, August 14), we’ll give you a four-pack of our sea salt caramels. Four for four, yes?

We’re open Tuesday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (You’ll find us at the markets, too, but the free caramels are only at the shop.)

Thank you for your support.
