Saucy Soiree 2013

Summer evenings in St. Louis are filled with BBQ’s, pool parties and a chance to spend time with friends.  Our friends at Sauce Magazine are planning quite a party this Sunday — we’ll be there, and you should be there, too.

The Saucy Soiree on Sunday, June 30th is the magazine’s annual tribute to St. Louis’ best restaurants and food purveyors.  The winners of the Readers’ Choice Award are announced that evening, and you will get a chance to sample offerings from many of the winners (and yes, there will be plenty of Kakao chocolate) in the ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel.  When the tasting party is over, the celebrating continues on the hotel’s rooftop, to the epic views of the St. Louis skyline at sunset.

Kakao Chocolate has been recognized for our chocolate confections by Sauce Magazine readers and editors for several years in a row now, (as well as by other publications and groups) and we always look forward to being a part of the Saucy Soiree.  Here’s more information about this ticketed event:  www.saucysoiree.com

The Saucy Soiree means that summer is in full swing for us, and while we are busy getting ready for all of our summer outings, we can’t help but notice the hints of summer in both of our Kakao Chocolate shops.  There’s our seasonally delicious Peculiar Pairings (the current offerings are inspired by and infused with Indian flavorings) there are thirst-quenching sodas at the Jefferson Avenue shop, and everyone’s favorite, Serendipity Ice Cream with Kakao syrups and toppings — now at both shops!

Don’t worry we still have plenty of our “regulars”, including our award-winning Sea Salt Caramels, in stock.  Be sure to stock up on our summer confections, because they make great hostess gifts for those BBQs and pool parties, too.  Of course, you will also need to have some on hand at home, too, for those nights you just want to settle in for the evening.

Kakao Chocolates are the perfect complement to your evening cocktail or that sweet something you crave after you’ve enjoyed summer’s bounty of fresh produce and grilled meats.  Whatever it is you have planned for your summer enjoyment, we hope we are part of it and hope to see you soon.

Taste of India Confections

Welcome to the latest Kakao Peculiar Pairing, with the Taste of India!

We’ve got some great treats for you this time, with some really exotic flavors.

On the upper left is Tracy’s Tamarin Apple Butter Caramel, made with apple butter and tamarind chutney caramel. It’s dipped in semisweet chocolate and topped with a piece of dried apple dusted in a chili powder blend.

To the right of that is Natalie’s Gulab Jamun Bonbons: milk chocolate cream ganache with cardamom, rosewater, and a toasted pistachio in the center, in a milk chocolate shell with beet powder flourish and silver luster.

Upper right is Monica’s Cinnamon Curry Truffle: semisweet cream ganache with cinnamon, curry, and almond oil, dipped in semisweet chocolate and topped with a toasted cashew.

Bottom right is Jenny’s Kulfi Caramel, made with cardamom, saffron, toasted almond and pistachio, dipped in milk chocolate and topped with a toasted almond.

In the middle on the bottom is Brian’s Chai Tea Truffle, made with Traveling Tea’s Masala Chai Tea, dipped in milk chocolate and sprinkled with a fine cinnamon.  (Yes, this truffle has been around for a long while, but it fit so well with the other Indian flavors we couldn’t leave it out.)

Last but not least, on the bottom left is Kate’s Saffron Turkish Delight, made with one of the most valuable spices in the world. Turkish Delight is similar to our pates de fruit fruit gels, but made with cornstarch instead of pectin.

The Peculiar Pairing confections are $2 each (the Chai Tea truffle is $1.50) and are also sold in a six pack set for $12. We’ll have them at both shops starting this afternoon.

Walking on the Wild Side (Zoofari edition)

Eating Kakao Chocolate can be sort of an adventure, don’t you think? Sometimes our flavor combinations are kind of wild. We work to put as much effort in making it fun to eat our chocolate as we do making it delicious.

This Friday, June 21, Kakao Chocolate joins a whole herd of regional food purveyors to help the St. Louis Zoo celebrate their bi-annual Zoofari fundraising event.  You can get more information about this ticketed event, which runs 7 – 11 p.m.,  at http://www.stlzoo.org/events/calendarofevents/zoofari/.

The St. Louis Zoo is one of the most exotic sites in St. Louis, and we are a perfect fit for this creative black-tie event. In the past we’ve seen formal wear from coats and ties, or tails and claws, to spots, stripes and animal patterns of all kinds. (We’ll be easy to spot in our Kakao Chocolate attire.)

Preparing for Zoofari has put some wild thoughts in our heads. We’re going to be sampling our Zebra Bon Bons — our special caramel with macadamia nuts, dried cherries, toasted coconut, and pretzels, dipped in dark chocolate. They’ll be decorated with white Zebra stripes, to fit in with the theme of this year’s event.

But we also can’t help but think about our recent Peculiar Pairings, with an exotic Latin American flair developed by our team of confectioners. We had Guava Moons and Pineapple Churros and Dulche de Leche Bon Bons, among other treats. These particular Kakao Chocolate confections have come and gone, but we’ll have similarly delicious treats when we launch our Taste of India Peculiar Pairing this Friday (stay tuned for our flavor listings). 

Of course, whenever you visit Kakao — just like when you visit the zoo — you are sure to find something unique you haven’t seen before.  We hope to see you at Zoofari this Friday, but if you can’t make it, stop by and see us at one of our Kakao Chocolate locations.

Father’s Day Secret

We know a secret, and it is about your dad.

Your dad loves chocolate.  We know you thought it was just your mom, but it’s really your dad, too.   

Yes, all year he manages to convince you that it’s your mother who needs the chocolate for the holidays or a birthday party. But really it is for him.

We’ve seen your dad at Kakao Chocolate, and for the longest time, he had us fooled, too. We figured it out one day when we forgot to put the tray of Sea Salt Caramels in the display case, and he thought we were out of them.  (We’ll spare you the gory details about his meltdown, but it was then and there that it was obvious this guy had it for chocolate.)

Information is power, and now that you know what your dad really wants for Father’s Day, you need to plan to stop by and see us and so you can get him exactly the perfect gift.

Of course, Sea Salt Caramels, dark or milk chocolate, are always a winner. But if you want to venture out and try some new treats, we have plenty of suggestions.  Make your dad giddy with our some Marshmallow Pies.  Or add a bit of sophistication with our new Caramel Marshmallow Pies (yes, the best of both worlds!).

Does dad like a nice stiff drink at day’s end?  We have the perfect gift:  Bourbon or Single Malt Scotch Truffles.  Is dad a wine connoisseur? Why not get him a bottle of his favorite wine and our Wine Pack with his favorite caramels? Or maybe you want to just get him a gift card?  

And if you want, you can put some fishing tackle or a tie in the box, too, just so he doesn’t suspect that you’re on to him.
